Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP became popular in the United States during the 70s. It is an approach used by therapists to alter someone’s behavior and thoughts to get a better outcome. NLP was first used to treat psychological disorders such as phobias and anxiety but in modern times, its widespread use varies from improving workplace performance or simply helps a person achieve personal happiness. When using NLP, you must employ a variety of behavioral, perceptual and communication techniques to be able to effectively change a person’s behavior and thought.
How Does NLP Work?
NLP is a lot different from hypnotherapy. A therapist must be able to detect the unconscious preferences and limitations of a person so that they can find ways to effectively connect with the client through conscious communication. It usually takes some time to build rapport and gather adequate information about the client since most people don’t open up that quickly to others. These are the most commonly used technique by NLP practitioners.
- Rapport – In this technique, the practitioner uses empathy to improve the connection with the client. Matching with the physical behavior of the client usually helps them feel more in tune with the therapist, improving response and communication between them.
- Anchoring – Through this technique, the therapist becomes more observant of the emotional states shown by the client. Some sensory experiences can trigger certain emotional states.
- Visual/Kinesthetic Dissociation – Some clients have associated negative feelings to some experiences in the past. The goal of this technique is to remove this negative association to change a client’s way of thinking.
- Swish pattern – The goal of this technique is to change the behavioral pattern of a client for better outcomes.
The Uses Of NLP
